Grimmleigh's Presents... Grimmplays!

We have been so incredibly awed by how supportive all of our friends have been. Seriously, we've been amazed at how much people have enthusiastically shown the world what we make. Because of your support, our little dream is on the verge of something we could not even fathom a year ago... But we can't tell you about that, yet.

We don't want to jinx it!

But we do want to say thank you with a cool little freebie that you can download and assemble to show off your Grimmleighs, or any other small collectible for that matter! Our new Grimmplays! Diorama Playsets will be available in our DLC section of the website, and the first one is available now, free of charge! The Grimmplays! Parlor is about 4" square when it is finished, and holds 2 Itty-Bitty Squidleighs or one Baby Squidleigh. We will have more Grimmplays! sets soon, as well as other downloadable accessories.

Cupcake Crazies Conquer Consumerism!

At the beginning of the summer we asked Gentry Blackburn at Frosty Darling if she wanted to carry Grimmleighs. She said yes, and we went into panic mode; Frosty Darling is a pretty cool shop, very retro chic with an awesome reputation around town. If you haven't been into Frosty Darling, you owe yourself a little "you" time to head down to third south and check it out.

We were going to bring some of our regular Grimmleighs (hard to call one of a kind dolls "regular"), but after talking with Gentry we wanted to do something unique for her shop. Then, we attended Gallery Stroll and saw a flyer for a Cupcake Social at Frosty Darling... The Cupcake Crazies were born!

Each Cupcake Crazy is a one-of-a-kind marvel of crochet-pastry fusion; No fat, chock full of fiber, and "possessed" with an undeniable charm (and a hunger for souls, but that's another story!). Cupcake Crazies are the perfect scapegoat for any blown diet, ruined meal, or homocidal urge to eat your neighbor's face! They're yarned cute, too!

Check the Cupcake Crazies out! They should be in shops and online soon!

BIG YARNY ROBOT!!!

One fateful day, Brian Young (Swankmotron from Big Shiny Robot) told us about this idea he and the rest of the BSR gang had been kicking around; An online marketplace at BSR where comic artists and geek craftspeople could set up a small shop to peddle their wares. Brian asked if he thought we could do a Grimmleigh of the Big Shiny Robot mascot.

Leigh, of course, said "YES! WE CAN MAKE A THOUSAND OF THEM"! Rachel, being the sensible half of the business, started looking for a place to hide the body.

Flash forward 10 days and we have our Big Shiny Robot prototype, and we think he's pretty cool! He's quite a bit bigger than the average Grimmleigh, measuring in at a whopping 12 inches! He has two hand painted panels, one for the face, and a second for his chest panel. The doll was made from an original pattern that Rachel cooked up, and should be available soon at Big Shiny Robot!

New Grimmleighs Fiends! Possessed Panda! Stare Bear!

Two new Grimmleighs Fiends have been posted to the shop... Pick your poison here! (as long as that poison is bear shaped, that is!)

Pango-Pan the Possessed Panda was the star performer at the Beijing Opera and Panda a Go-Go, and really drove the crowds crazy with her interpretive dance moves. Then, poor Pango-Pan made the mistake of rejecting the advances of the nefarious wizard Lo-Pan, who cursed Pango-Pan with the spirit of Kumi-Wango-Bob. Those of you who know your Chinese mythology understand the potency of this curse, those of you ignorant of this horrible deed can count yourselves lucky! Now Pango-Pan wanders the land, eating small children and inflicting nostril flatulence on the unwary!

Larry the Leering Stare-Bear used to have some manners, until he was forced to watch Showgirls 42 times by a group of drunken Cub Scouts. Ever since that fateful night, Larry has been spotted lurking in trees around Sorority houses, hiding in showers, and trying to set up camp in random undergarment drawers.

Use the navigation bar on the left to check out all the fun in the Grimmleighs Fiends section!

Monkey Theatre? What Kept You?

Anyone who knows LGK also knows about his monkey obsession. That man loves him some monkeys! Put a monkey in a movie, it's an instant classic. Give the man monkeys on roller-skates, he's entertained for hours.

And if you REALLY know him, you know how much LGK likes mythology. And then there's that whole papercraft thing.

What if you threw all three together?

While strolling around one of the coolest papercraft sites in the world we found this link. It said monkey. LGK said "clicky". And this is what we found:

Yeah, it's a papercraft theater that starts the beginning of a Chinese myth about Monkey, and his journey to the west. This papercraft model is the first of nine models that will be released, all to promote an opera about Monkey that was designed by the artist behind the Gorillaz ( and Tank Girl ) Jamie Hewlett!

Click here to check out the papercraft theater, and get some info about an awesome stage production!

FREE Baby Grimmleigh Roadster Papercraft Download!

Sometimes we get a little crazy... Making crazy monsters and collectibles all day long can make you goofy in the brain-pan! But, that can be a good thing.

Saturday we were sitting around and talking about shops we wanted to take Grimmleighs to, new dolls we wanted to make, and next month's Craft Sabbath. But Leigh only had one thing on his mind; A little roadster for Baby Squidleighs. He couldn't get it out of his head, and spent most of Saturday and Sunday sketching out designs. Finally, a classic, sporty little number came together, and after prototyping, this is what he came up with:

Leigh has had a pretty rabid fascination with papercrafting for most of his life, and everything from X-Wing fighters to Marvel Super-Heroes have been cut out, folded up, and glued together in our little workshop. This model is not the most complicated, but we'll have some directions shortly. Basic papercraft rules apply; Dotted lines are for scoring and folding, a dot in a tab means it's for gluing!

The Baby Squidleigh Roadster is free for you to download, and we have provided two versions, too! Have fun building a classic tan car, or print out the template and design one of your own! And you make up a really cool design, send us the art! We'd love to share it with everyone out there!

Click on the image to make it bigger, then save it to your drive. We recommend printing the model on card-stock, and use a laser printer if you can! We'll have printed sheets at Craft Sabbath shows for a dollar a piece if you don't have a good printer!

New Grimmleighs! Cthulhu! Headbands! Monkeys! Security Space Monkey!

All new items in the Grimmleighs shop pages, click the under the thumbnails to check them out!

Deluxe Cthulhu

Deluxe Cthulhu is a giant of a Grimmleigh, measuring well over 10 inches tall and packing tons of detail! Leigh spent some extra time layering in rich emerald hues, and then decided that beauty such as this needed something more! After careful deliberation, the skeletal tiara was painted in between Cthulhu's brows. Sure, Lovecraft never wrote about Cthulhu sporting a tiara, but we're pretty sure he would have if he had lived long enough!

Pugsly Pugglesford

Puglsy Pugglesford was a kept dog; His mistress kept him in a lavish home, with his own butler, the best clothes, and an incredible social life. Although most people would give their left lung to live such a life, Pugsly was bored senseless. He yearned for the great outdoors; The wind in his ears, his tongue able to loll about as it wished! After years of comfort, Puglsy finally decided to make a dash for it, and ran off to ride the rails and walk the trails of America!

Security Space Monkey

Space may be the Final Frontier, but the Security Space Monkey knows that the real danger is on the ground. Space itself is pretty cushy; plenty of food and space babes around every corner. It's not perilous until the dashing Captain gets the idea to beam everything in a red shirt down to the "Planet of the Red Shirt Eating Sanity Slugs". This Security Space Monkey has survived countless missions due to his amazing survival instinct, and incredible hiding skills!

Eeknaccio Monkey

Eeknaccio was such a happy monkey when he was young. Then he met a little monkey that liked to wear diapers on it's head and sing Gilbert and Sullivan songs. Now, whenever Eeknaccio hears a song, he starts to panic, knowing full well that the wee little capuchin will come streaking by, diaper fully secured to noggin, belting out a little ditty from The Mikado.

Lavender Fiendish Flower Headband
Pink Fiendish Flower Headband
The Headless Headband is a new innovation from Grimmleighs Labs; Silly little Fiendish Flowers and Squidleighs soundly secured to a matching cloth covered headband. Perfect for fashionistas of all ages!

Smashing Success

If I do say so myself, the Next Gen ~ Kid's Craft Show was a ton of fun and more successful than we'd hoped!
The kids really came prepared and eager!  Grandparents and friends came from far and wide (even a surprise visit from Oregon!) to support the kids and their artistic endeavors!
As of this morning, with all but 4 artists reporting back, the group is already making donations of over $150 to their favorite charities!  (Including: Salt Lake Animal Services "Pit Crew", Humane Society, Audobon Society for Gulf Bird Rescue, Paws & Claws Lab Animal Rescue, Dancing Cats, No More Homeless Pets in Utah, The Open Classroom & Youth City)

Thanks to everyone who came out for the event!   Thanks to everyone who helped w/ refreshments & donations (Kelly @ Cakewalk for her awesome vegan mini cupcakes!)  Big Thanks to Joe @ nobrow for hosting us and Craft Sabbath Maven Meg for her support!

When's the next one???  That's the question I heard a LOT last night.  So I'll be getting out the calendar and finding a time, looking for a maybe bigger location, soon!  Stay Tuned!

In the mean time, please to enjoy some lovely pictures from the event (Thanks to Anna, Carrie, Sarah & The Pit Crew folks for letting me steal your pictures since my camera went on the fritz)

CRAFT ~ TNG

Everybody’s talking about the DYI movement and the Crafting “Revolution”.  These aren’t your “Granny’s crafts” either.  There’s a lot of talk about how crafting is becoming more popular with the “younger” generation...and by that we usually mean the hip, 20 to early-30-somethings...but what about the EVEN-YOUNGER generation?  The Next Generation?

Rachel decided that these Future-Artisans might like a venue and a way to learn about crafting & selling their wares.  Pair that concept with a 10 year old daughter that needed to be kept busy this summer and voila   The Next Gen~ Kid’s Craft Show & Artist’s Reception was born

A “call for artists” went out earlier this summer and over a dozen fantastic kids signed up for what we hope will be a great and educational event. Philanthropy is a huge part of the handmade philosophy so the kids are being asked to donate to a favorite charity as well.   Here are profiles” of some of the artists, the charities they’ve chosen to donate to, and pictures of what you can expect to see.

First we have Jerek, who is going into the 7th grade and likes math.  He’s a very talented illustrator who’s preferred  mediums are colored pencils & markers.  His favorite artist is Luis Wain, and he will be donating to the Humane Society because he loves animals.

Then we have a brother/sister team:  Miles and Amelia are in the 4th and 3rd grade and their favorite subjects are recess & writing.  Miles enjoys working with clay and will be featuring his eyeball creations, with names like Macho Eyeball, and Frank Zappa (his favorite artist)  Eyeball. Amelia will be featuring her crazy sock monsters and her favorite artist is her Dad,  photographer Kevin Lee.  Both of these kids will be donating to the Audobon Society’s Gulf of Mexico Recovery Fund.

Lora is a 5th grade homeschooler who specializes in polymer clay figurines and has learned a lot from her Aunt Suzanne (local designer Sorry Clementine).  Here’s what she has to say about her favorite artist, Van Gogh: “He was a crazy buy, but he was cool.  I guess part of the reason he was crazy was because of the paints he used, because the paint back then was toxic”.  She’s donating to the Salt Lake County Animal Services “Pit Crew”, where she got her “siblings” Max & Millie.

Last but not least, Molly is a 5th grader who loves to sew with felt & crochet amigurumi.  She prefers using acrylic yarns because of the bright colors and because “some people are allergic to wool”. Her list of favorite artists includes local crafters babyGgear, her mom & dad (of Grimmleighs Fiends), softie artist Love and a Sandwich, comic book artist Doug TenApel and everyone at Charm City Cakes.   She makes felt accessories and specializes in animal toys which she donates to local shelters to “help the animals feel happy” She will be donating to the Paws & Claws Benefit for retired lab animals.

When & Where? Saturday, August 21st 6-8:30 p.m. @ Nobrow 315 East 300 South

This event will be free to the public and is being generously hosted by Nobrow coffee & tea and sponsored by Craft Sabbath. Light refreshments will be served.
